PRESS RELEASE
The Elbert County Republican Women are pleased to announce the winners of their 7th Annual Essay Contest for 7th and 8th grade middle school students and 9th through 12th grade high school students in Elbert County. Students participating in home schooling were also eligible. This year’s essay topic was: “What Does Our United States Constitution Provide?”
The Awards Ceremony was held Wednesday evening, January 16th at the Elbert County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. All of the contest winners and finalists received copies of the Constitution provided by US Representative Tom Tancredo. Cash prizes were also presented to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winners, and both 1st Place winners received an American flag from Sheriff William Frangis.
Essays were judged on the 6 + 1 Writing Traits Model, which includes content as well as proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The patriotism expressed in the essay is also a key element in the scoring. Students can earn extra points with a creative cover sheet.
The Essay Contest Winners are:
Middle School: 1st Place - Nathan Kelly, Big Sandy Middle School; 2nd Place - Jared Conner, Legacy Academy and 3rd Place - Katie Mank, Legacy Academy.
High School: 1st Place Baxter Long - Frontier High School; 2nd Place - Ian Stodghill, Deer Trail Home School and 3rd Place - Sara Corwin, Frontier High School.
The Middle School winners were selected from the Top Ten Finalists as follows:
Jared Conner, Legacy Academy; Nathan Kelly, Big Sandy Middle School; Cheyenne Kennaday, Big Sandy Middle School; Rachel Khoury, Elizabeth Middle School; Jessica Linton, Big Sandy Middle School; Katie Mank, Legacy Academy; Wade A. Rau, Big Sandy Middle School; Caitie Runyon, Legacy Academy; Marissa Sotomayor, Big Sandy Middle School and Brandy Warnecke, Big Sandy Middle School.
Best of Middle School honors were awarded to:
Jared Conner, Legacy Academy; Nathan Kelly, Big Sandy Middle School; Rachel Khoury, Elizabeth Middle School and Sage Stapleton, Kiowa Middle School.
Best of High School honors went to Ian Stodghill, Deer Trail Home School and Baxter Long, Frontier High School.
